FLORA & FAUNA - WETLANDS - PART 1

What are Wetlands?

Wetlands are a living link between land and water. Wetlands may not always be wet, but they have water during at least some part of the growing season.

There are many different kinds of wetlands throughout the world including: tidal salt marshes, freshwater marshes, and riparian areas, to name just a few. Fresh water marshes occur in low-lying areas, and riparian areas are found along the edges of rivers, lakes, and streams.

Development

Conserving Our Wetlands

Historically, many wetlands have been destroyed to make room for agriculture and, more recently, development. Here in California, we’ve lost over 85% of our natural wetlands – the greatest percentage of loss in the United States.

It’s important to protect and restore our remaining wetlands so they can be enjoyed by future generations.

Wetlands At Work!

They may look calm and peaceful on the surface, but our wetlands are hard at work. Wetlands help keep our water clean by providing natural water filtration and nutrient cycling. They also help replenish groundwater and contribute to flood control.

Wetlands are home to Amphibians

The Wetlands Community

Wetlands are home to many species of birds, fish, amphibians, invertebrates, and plants. Some species, like cattails, can only live in wetland areas. Others, birds like the Snowy Egret, visit wetlands to look for food.

Wetlands can be great spots for recreation, such as fishing and boating.
