FLORA & FAUNA - NON-NATIVE SPECIES - PART 6 |
Non-Native Invaders
What we plant in our backyard doesn’t always stay in our backyard. When non-native plants escape into our wildlands, they invade and often threaten natural habitats. Invasive species can spread rapidly, replacing native plants and changing the native habitat so that local birds, mammals, and insects can no longer live there. In addition, non-native plants can increase the potential for wildfires, reduce water resources, and lead to erosion and flooding. |
Give ‘em An Inch…
Invasive species grow and reproduce quickly, competing with native plants for light, nutrients, and space. Giant Reed (Arundo donax), Pampas Grass (Cortaderia species), Saltcedar (Tamarix species), and Mustard (Brassica species) are some of the most common invasive plants in our area. |

|
California Palm Trees?
Most palm trees, like the Mexican Fan Palm, are not native to California. Often, these non-native palms are pesky invaders that can rapidly outcompete and replace native species.

|
Invasive Creatures
Releasing unwanted pets may seem harmless, but domestic animals such as ducks, turtles, and cats can be extremely harmful to native animals when released into the wild.
