SANTEE LAKES HISTORY - A LOOK BACK - PART 6

Lake 5

In 1964, 50,000 visitors came to Santee Lakes. At the time only Lake 4 was available for recreation. By 1966 the total attendance was expected to reach 100,000. To meet this demand, Lake 5 was built in 1965. It cost $125,000, equal to the combined cost for all the other lakes.

Saving Trees

Many of the existing Sycamore trees were saved and islands were formed around them.

Lake 4

Lake 4 was the first lake to open for recreation. Visitors enjoyed picnicking, boating, fishing and simply being outside near water.

Fun on Lake 4

Before the bridge was built, Park visitors used a floating pontoon tethered by a rope to get to the island on Lake 4.
